Let them love you
Jul 23, 2025
Our own projections and expectations of HOW we are to be loved are the very things in the way of fully receiving love. Not only from those in our lives but more importantly, from God.
We hear this thrown around- God loves you. It’s one of the most quoted and famous Bible verses
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, He sent His only begotten son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life”
Yeah…….BUT. I’ve often said that people can indeed love us before we love ourselves but we simply won't be able to receive it until we know our own love.
Receiving love has to be one of the hardest things for us to do, especially for those of us that have some innate belief that we are faulty, flawed and not good enough so therefore unworthy and undeserving of love.
Love from the creator of the universe seems like something that would feel amazing but we believe that it’s reserved for a more deserved recipient.
And we apply this to the love of others too. It’s a juxtaposition. We both feel incredibly unworthy of love, yet we expect people to love us to our exact prescription of how we believe they ought to love us.
What if we LET them love us how they want to love us? I’m not talking about not having needs or wants, nor failing to express those desires but how often are we blocking love from someone because of our own viewpoint of what their love should look like?
- It’s the child who is gifted a bike but rejects it for being the wrong colour.
- Or the accountant who receives all the receipts but then complains because they’re unorganised.
- It’s your mother who wants to fuss over you but can’t hold your hand in the mud; you make that mean that she doesn’t love you.
Is that entirely true though? Who are we to say what love “should” look like?
I invite you today to set an intention and pray over this:
God, I pray that you soften my heart today and relieve me of the bondage of my mind. Help me to let You and the people around me, love me the way that they do, not the way that my mind expects them to. Help me to love them as they come and let them love me. In the mighty name of Jesus, I pray, Amen.
Let me know your thoughts. Hit me up with your questions. Tell me what’s on your heart and send through your prayer requests. I want to love you. God wants to love you. Can you let us?
